Newcastle United 'identify next statement signing' as fresh links to World Cup star emerge

Newcastle United are reportedly keen on landing Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic in a bid to strengthen their Champions League qualification credentials.

The Magpies finished up the first part of their Premier League campaign in third and are looking to add extra firepower to their attack in January.

The Mirror report Newcastle want to make the USA international "their next statement signing", with the Magpies just one of the Premier League sides monitoring Pulisic.

Manchester United and Arsenal are also said to interested in signing Pulisic but would rather the move was a loan. That could work in Newcastle's favour with Chelsea preferring to sell the American winger.

However, a permanent move to Tyneside would likely prove to be a costly one for Newcastle. £40m is the mark Chelsea would look to start negotiations at, which may prove too rich for even Newcastle's blood.

There's no doubt the 24-year-old is talented, but Newcastle will hope they can talk Chelsea down from this price point. Pulisic is out of favour at Stamford Bridge under Graham Potter, having made just a handful of appearances off the bench for Chelsea this term.

And a move to the north east, which could give him regular first team football, is one that would reportedly appeal to the American.

However, should they be unable to land Pulisic, Newcastle will instead turn their attention to pursuing Leeds United's Jack Harrison and Brighton's Leandro Trossard, a player who Magpies sporting director Dan Ashworth is more than familiar with following his time with the Seagulls.

Newcastle were credited with interest in Harrison in the summer but Leeds played hardball over the Whites winger. After losing key players in Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha to Manchester City and Barcelona respectively, they were unwilling to sell Harrison as well.

The Leeds winger has endured a disappointing campaign compared to last season, which could see Jesse Marsch and co climb down from the £35m figure Newcastle were quoted in the summer.

Given his form this term for high flying Brighton, Trossard would certainly be an interesting option for Newcastle to explore signing.

The 28-year-old has scored seven goals and registered three assists in 14 Premier League games for the Seagulls this season, with his contract set to expire in the summer.

While Brighton do have an option to extend the Belgian's deal by a further year, they could opt to move him on sooner rather than later.

At 28, the winger is in the prime of his career and Brighton would likely stand to benefit financially by selling him sooner rather than later.
