Newcastle United headlines: Sven Botman update, Jose Enrique wish list and Guimaraes praise

Your Newcastle United evening headlines for Sunday, May 29.

Botman to Milan

Sven Botman’s preferred destination is AC Milan, according to Italian sports journalist Daniele Logo. Newcastle made the Dutchman their top centre-back in January but the club’s precarious league position was a hurdle.

San Siro sporting director and club legend Paolo Maldini hinted last week that the Serie A champions were looking at other targets. He said: “We followed him, but there are many good players in that role.”

These comments generated new-found hope among Toon supporters a deal for Botman could be struck but fresh reports suggest otherwise. To read more, click here.

“Sign a striker” - Enrique

Former Magpies left-back Jose Enrique has urged Eddie Howe to sign a “world-class striker” in the transfer market. While Callum Wilson has excelled since returning from a torn calf, his injury record is a problem and the Spaniard believes Newcastle need to bolster their forward options.

“I believe they (Newcastle) should bring in a world-class striker,” he told bettingexpert. “Even if they have Callum Wilson and Chris Wood. It depends on what Eddie (Howe) sees every day in training.

“They were talking about (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin. I really, really like Calvert-Lewin. Same thing again, he had big problems with injuries this season so I’m not sure if Newcastle will sign him but obviously Eddie knows him well.”

Top marks for Bruno

ChronicleLive readers gave Bruno Guimaraes the highest score of any player in our end of season ratings. An impressive six-month stint since arriving from Lyon in January saw those surveyed rank the Brazilian a staggering 9.3 out of 10.

Joelinton - who scooped the club’s official Player of the Season award - finished second with 9.0 and Dan Burn (8.5) secured third spot. Every player who represented Newcastle in 2021-22 was ranked, with Jeff Hendrick receiving the lowest score of 3.1.
