Newcastle United headlines: duo receive England call-up, Ben Foster on rejection and Liverpool fine

Your Newcastle United headlines for Thursday, September 15.

Trips and Pope make England squad

Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope have received England call-ups for the upcoming fixtures against Germany and Italy. Not since 2007 have the Magpies had two players called up to Three Lions duty when Alan Smith and Michael Owen were selected by Steve McClaren.

Gareth Southgate is up against it in Group 3 of the Nations League, with no wins in four matches. A humiliating 4-0 home defeat to Hungary triggered alarm bells just months before the winter World Cup.

The Newcastle duo have a chance to correct that after earning a place in England’s 28-man squad.

Foster on Toon rejection

Former Manchester United, West Brom and Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster has retired from professional football after admitting he rejected a move to Newcastle. An injury to Karl Darlow forced Toon chiefs to seek a new backup shot-stopper, with the ex-England goalie first in line.

However, a move broke down at the final hour as Foster considered moving away from his family. At 39, he now realises that the time has come to hang up his gloves.

Speaking on his podcast, Foster outlined why he turned down a “massive” offer from Newcastle. The goalie said: To get to Newcastle by car is four hours. It's a bit of a trek and not one you can commute to every day.

“Bearing in mind I live in the Midlands and have lived in the Midlands for the last ten years since I left Man United. I'm established in the Midlands, the kids go to school... it works.

"It works perfectly, we've got the family unit and all that sort of stuff. This offer comes in from Newcastle and genuinely I've gone 'Oh my gosh, this is massive.' To be able to sign for a club that you know is going to be winning Premier Leagues in the next three or four years.

"You've got to bare in mind I'm 39. If I'm in my twenties, it's a no-brainer. The lads would have been brilliant and I would have buzzed off the stadium, the fans, all that kind of stuff. The overriding sinking feeling was I don't want to do this.

“That gut feeling, you know when people say you have to go with your gut feeling and I had this feeling deep down, I just don't want to do it."

Liverpool fine received

Newcastle and Liverpool coaches have been fined for their misconduct during last month’s 2-1 defeat at Anfield. Tensions spilled over on the bench after Fabio Varvalho’s controversial 98th-minute winner.

Toon coach Dan Hodges threw a water bottle and Reds assistant John Achterberg issued a V-sign at the opposing bench amid wild celebrations following the late goal. Both will also receive a one-game touchline ban for their actions, meaning Hodges will miss the clash against Bournemouth this weekend.

An FA statement read: "Coaches from Liverpool FC and Newcastle United FC have been banned, fined and warned for breaching FA Rule E3 during their Premier League game on Wednesday 31 August 2022.

"John Achterberg and Daniel Hodges both admitted that their behaviour during the 98th minute was improper, and the Liverpool FC coach also accepted that he used abusive and insulting gestures.

"An independent Regulatory Commission has fined the Liverpool FC and Newcastle United FC coaches £7,000 and £6,000 respectively, banned them from the touchline for one fixture, and warned them as to their future conduct. The written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course."
