Newcastle United headlines as 'world class' transfer claim made & Howe prepares for Bournemouth

A look at the latest Newcastle United headlines on Tuesday, 13 September.

Newcastle told they have made 'world-class' transfer amid Allan Saint-Maximin claim

Alexander Isak can develop into a 'world-class' striker at Newcastle United, according to Jose Enrique. The former Magpies defender also feels Allan Saint-Maximin can 'destroy any defender' on his day and is good enough to play for any club in the world.

The Magpies had been frustrated in their efforts to land attacking reinforcements this summer, before deciding to smash their transfer record for Isak. The Sweden international is regarded as one of the most promising forwards in European football, and made an instant impact on his black-and-white debut against Liverpool.

Isak was not eligible to make his first Newcastle start in the draw at Wolves, but opened the scoring at Anfield three days' later with an emphatic finish beyond Alisson. Enrique believes his former club have so far spent their money wisely following the takeover, and is confident the signing of the former Real Sociedad star should actually benefit United number nine Callum Wilson.

St James' Park will stand as one to pay tribute to the Queen as football gets its chance

Let Bournemouth come up from yonder shore on the Channel to reunite with their one-time hero Eddie Howe, get tonked, and return from whence they came. The rest of sport has resumed business while paying fulsome tribute to the life of the Queen in glorious unison.

We have had the Great North Run and Newcastle Falcons rugby up here. The Queen's beloved racing returned with the St Leger run in her honour. England clinched the Test series with South Africa under the patriotic leadership of Durham's Ben Stokes. Rory McIlroy was pipped in the Wentworth golf.

Tuesday heralded Liverpool and Spurs in the Champions League plus the unleashing of a glut of Football League fixtures and Gateshead in the National League. Now is the time for Premier League football to be brought back into action while accepting police limitations in the capital the weekend before a state funeral inevitably means certain games being unable to go ahead.

Dan Burn's response to 'tough question' on 'expectations' at Newcastle United

Dan Burn believes Newcastle United will have enjoyed a 'very good season' if they finish in the top-half of the Premier League table. The former Brighton defender would also like to see Eddie Howe's side push for an 'outside chance' of European football next season.

Expectations on Tyneside have been the topic of discussion in recent weeks as a result of the Magpies' stunning end to last season. Eddie Howe's side finished the campaign in fine fashion, pulling comfortably clear of relegation danger following a January transfer spend in excess of £90 million.

Further investment this summer which has seen the blockbuster arrivals of Sven Botman and Alexander Isak has led supporters to question what Newcastle could achieve in the current campaign. Howe's side have impressed with their performances, but are also yet to win in the Premier League since the opening-day success over Nottingham Forest.

FA Cup replays could be scrapped again to ease potential fixture backlog

FA Cup third and fourth-round replays could be scrapped this season in an attempt to help clubs catch up on postponed matches following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Replays were scheduled to return this year after they were ditched in each of the last two seasons due to COVID.

However, according to PA News Agency, this is one solution under consideration to solve the fixture backlog. Last weekend's Premier League programme was called off as a mark of respect for the Queen, with several mores games postponed this weekend.

Newcastle's game with Bournemouth this weekend goes ahead, but Leeds United's scheduled trip to Manchester United on Sunday has been called off due to policing issues, which have come about due to the increased presence needed in London for the Queen’s funeral. Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool, and Brighton’s match against Crystal Palace are both also postponed this weekend, with the latter due to planned rail strikes.

Eddie Howe's 'entertaining' Bournemouth success and how Newcastle United are now replicating it

The return of Premier League football this weekend gives Newcastle United the chance to improve their Premier League record before the upcoming international break. For Eddie Howe, it also presents a reunion with Bournemouth for the first time since leaving the Cherries in 2020.

Before it all went downhill with Bournemouth losing their top flight status, Howe guided the south coast outfit to three promotions in six seasons. The club enjoyed five successive years of Premier League football under his stewardship, subsequently earning him legendary status among supporters.

Much was made of Bournemouth's style of play under Howe, with entertaining, attacking football the key for the now- Newcastle manager. The mindset during games at the Vitality Stadium was very much that Bournemouth would concede but also often outscore their opponents anyway.

Howe discussed this mantra on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football before taking the Newcastle job, explaining his reasoning behind championing entertaining football during his time down south.

'Get you a bit angry' - Newcastle owners have an even better manager after his 'painful' failure

Bournemouth is a club that will always be in Eddie Howe's heart. However, the Newcastle United head coach will only have one thought in his mind when he faces his former side for the first time - and that is to win Saturday's game at St James' Park.

Howe's allegiances lie elsewhere now and, put simply, the 44-year-old is not the same manager he was on the South Coast. Few are better placed to comment on that than Charlie Daniels, the former Bournemouth defender, who had a particularly close bond with Howe and just so happens to be a lifelong fan of the Magpies.

"The way Eddie has galvanised the team and galvanised the city is very similar," Daniels told ChronicleLive. "But the way Eddie and his team have approached it and worked alongside JT, Purchy, Graeme Jones, Tinners and everyone there has been different."
