Trippier took pay cut to join Newcastle
Kieran Trippier has revealed that he took a pay cut to join Newcastle United because it was the 'perfect' move for the England international and his family.
Trippier has proved a transformational figure at Newcastle, on and off the field, and the defender has helped take a side who were 19th place when he arrived to one that is now fighting for a place at Europe's top table less than a year-and-a-half later.
"This was the perfect decision for me," Trippier told the High Performance podcast. "There were loads of comments when I first signed here as you can imagine: 'You came here for money'. What people don't actually realise is I came here on less money than when I was at Madrid. That's true. I could have signed a new three-year contract at Madrid.
"I had no relegation clause. I took less money. I took a gamble but, again, I have no regrets. That's it."
Saint-Maximin cameo explained
Eddie Howe was pleased with Allan Saint-Maximin's brief cameo in Newcastle United's 2-0 defeat to Arsenal and hinted there may be more minutes available for the Frenchman in the final games of the season.
Saint-Maximin recently returned to Tyneside after recovering from a hamstring problem in his native France. The 26-year-old only managed 15 minutes at St James' Park on Sunday, replacing Joe Willock as the Magpies chased the game.
“It was huge for us, and I thought Maxi did very well when he came on," Howe said of Saint-Maximin's contribution. "We probably thought he had 15 minutes maximum in his legs after only two training sessions, and a long period out. I was delighted with his contribution.”
Howe wants X-factor
Eddie Howe says Newcastle United will not overreact after their defeat against Arsenal and keep things in context ahead of the clash at Leeds.
Howe felt that the only thing missing from his players was the X-factor, on a day in which the woodwork was rattled twice against Arsenal. Howe reflected: "It was a high-quality game, it was end-to-end, it was open, but we were just missing that X-factor today, that missing part of our game.
"We hope against Leeds in our next game that we deliver that together because we have a tough run of fixtures to come and we need to get some results to get over the line."
