Newcastle United headlines as Toon tipped to challenge for Premier League title and Howe truth told

A round-up of the latest Newcastle United headlines on Saturday, May 27.

The inside story of Spurs 'Superhero' Lucas Moura's Champions League heroics amid Newcastle links

Newcastle United's Champions League qualification has capped off a remarkable campaign and transfer talk has already started on Tyneside. The Chronicle understands Eddie Howe and his side have been offered the opportunity to sign Tottenham Hotspur forward Lucas Moura with his exit from the capital already confirmed.

Moura said: "Now, we keep going and wait for the next challenge. It’s difficult to say more… I’ve already cried a lot. I will keep every moment in my heart - and I will be back."

For Howe and a number of this current Magpies squad, it's the first time they'll be playing Champions League football. So, to see the likes of Moura offered to the Toon, should come as no surprise.

Paul Merson and Chris Sutton raise same Newcastle United concern for final day clash at Chelsea

Newcastle United have just one more game to go before they bring the curtain down on what has been a fantastic season. Eddie Howe's men travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday for the final match of the Premier League campaign.

They will then turn their attentions to a well-earned break before focus shifts towards the 2023-24 campaign, which features Champions League football for the first time since 2002-03.

Howe's men start the day in fourth spot, two points behind third-place Manchester United. The Magpies could still finish third if they return from the capital with all three points and Fulham avoid defeat at Old Trafford.

Why Louis Saha believes Newcastle United can challenge for the Premier League title next season

Louis Saha believes Newcastle United can challenge for the Premier League title next season, but says that's the case for five or six clubs.

An excellent season sees Eddie Howe's side just one win away from securing a top-four finish and a Champions League place next term. It's been an incredible rise after finishing 11th last season, with the takeover allowing for a new direction for the club.

But few predicted the Magpies would rise so quickly up the table to be finishing in the top four this term, and now most are warning that next season could be more difficult as their squad is more stretched as it battles on two fronts. But former Newcastle striker Saha has broken that trend, instead topping Newcastle to strengthen in the summer transfer window and continue to battle at the top end of the division - claiming they can be one of five or six clubs competing to win the Premier League title.

BBC pundit makes Newcastle United pick in Premier League Team of the Week

BBC pundit Garth Crooks has praised Newcastle United skipper Kieran Trippier for his part in guiding the Toon Army into the Champions League next season.

Monday night's goalless draw with relegation-threatened Leicester City secured the point Eddie Howe's men needed to ensure they'll be a part of Europe's elite club competition next term.

Trippier has been in terrific form for the Magpies, not just this season, but since his arrival on Tyneside in January last year, proving to be one of the club's best acquisitions in years.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek's missed Newcastle United opportunity as verdict passed on Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher has 'half a chance' to secure a move to Newcastle United but there is a belief that the Magpies should be setting their sights higher in this summer's transfer window.

With Eddie Howe's side traveling to Stamford Bridge this Sunday to face Chelsea in the final game of the season, it will be a chance for the manager and Dan Ashworth to cast an eye over several players who have been linked with a move to Tyneside.

Gallagher is one of those who United have previously held an interest in but the midfield choose a loan move to Crystal Palace last January, and it is believed Chelsea's asking price last summer stopped any potential bid then.

Timely Man City announcement explains Eddie Howe's decision to keep fringe Newcastle United star

As Eddie Howe was midway through his pre-Chelsea press conference on Friday morning a new one-year contract for 37-year-old Scott Carson was being announced by Premier League champions Manchester City.

Carson, who has only played twice in four years for Pep Guardiola's side, is a major part of the dressing room at Eastlands despite his lack of minutes and crucially also fits the homegrown quota needed when playing Premier League and Champions League football.

In UEFA club competitions, teams are allowed to have 25 players in their first-team squad and must have at least eight locally-trained players named in it. 'Homegrown' players are those who have been trained by their club or by another club in the same associated country for at least three years between the age of 15 and 21.

Newcastle United set for invite to Kieran Tierney bidding process as star gets rave reviews about life in Toon

Newcastle United are yet to commence talks with Kieran Tierney despite increasing talk he is high on Eddie Howe's wanted list.

Howe batted away any hints on names at his Press conference on Friday, but insisted that some of the players on his wish-list fit into the marquee bracket. Tierney would be one of them but sources at the Arsenal end have made it clear that any discussions on a move to St James' Park are yet to take place.

Tierney was scouted extensively by Newcastle before the takeover and even back then was interested by the prospect of a move from Celtic to Newcastle before Arsenal swooped for £25million. After falling out of favour with the Gunners, Tierney would now command a fee of £30million and would bolster Newcastle's left-hand side significantly.

Tierney's representatives are set to hold talks with the Gunners before contacting serious bidders for the full-back. And United look like they will be one of the clubs getting a call.

Eddie Howe sends 'hardest' transfer window warning as 'very small' Newcastle pool truth told

Eddie Howe has predicted this summer will be Newcastle United's 'hardest' window yet because the Magpies are now fishing in a 'very small' pond.

Preparations for the upcoming window have stepped up this week after Newcastle qualified for the Champions League. While Howe intends to keep the majority of the group together, the Newcastle boss has quickly set about improving a side who have taken the black-and-whites back to Europe's top table for the first time in 20 years.

That won't necessarily be straightforward because, unlike previous windows, there are now fewer players available within budget who can actually make this side better. While a move to Newcastle may appeal to a number of elite targets, convincing clubs to sell these individuals at an acceptable price won't be easy, either.
