Newcastle United headlines: Anthony Gordon medical, Southampton rest, bold Carabao Cup claim

Your Newcastle United headlines for Saturday, January 28.

Gordon medical passed

ChronicleLive understands Anthony Gordon has passed a medical and a club announcement confirming his signing is imminent.

The 21-year-old arrived on Tyneside this morning to undergo his medical and the usual transfer formalities before completing a big-money move to Newcastle. New Everton boss Sean Dyche sanctioned his exit with the player making it clear he wanted to leave Goodison Park.

Saints rest up

Southampton manager Nathan Jones overhauled his squad for their FA Cup clash against Blackpool. Unlike Newcastle, the Saints do not have a weekend to recover before the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg on Tuesday.

Jones, with one eye on Tuesday, rested eight players as the Saints welcomed Championship opposition. One of those was forced, with Duje Caleta-Car’s red card in midweek ruling him out of the Seasiders clash.

Star players like James Ward-Prowse and Moussa Djenepo were given the weekend off. First-team regulars Mislav Orsic, Sekou Mara and Lyanco kept their place in the team.

Wilson picks player of the season

Callum Wilson believes Nick Pope has been Newcastle United’s standout performer in 2022-23. He told the Footballer's Football podcast: “I’m so happy for him. He’s keeping clean sheets and getting records for himself. We want him to get the Golden Glove, that’s probably something that is on his mind. As a team, the defence is doing so well.

“The boys are buzzing off clean sheets and that is our mentality. We’ve got the most in the top five leagues across Europe. The boys at the back deserve a special mention and I think Nick has been our player of the season so far.

“He has kept us in games when we have needed him. Against Crystal Palace, he pulled off a worldie. He’s an important part of the puzzle at the moment.”

Murphy on takeover cause

Danny Murphy believes the Saudi-backed takeover has inspired Newcastle United players to raise their game. Since the new regime took charge in October 2021, several former outcasts have taken centre stage.

He told talkSPORT: “They’re doing tremendously well. They’ve certainly come forward quicker than I anticipated. They’re doing it from a very strong foundation of defensive solidity.

“(It is) brilliant what he's (Howe) done in that respect. But, although they're difficult to beat and don't concede many goals, they still pose a threat going the other way. It's the hardest balance to have in football.

“They’re enjoyable to watch. A lot of those players are playing with a hunger that you need to move forward and be successful. Some of them want to be on the journey and know the club is going to spend. There are going to be players coming in and the ones that are (already) there look like they're trying to stay on board.”

Bold Carabao Cup claims

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker believes Newcastle are the 'better team' ahead of a potential Carabao Cup final showdown.

The pundit told Apostagolos: “I think that Man United and Newcastle are going to face each other in the final and it will be a tough nut to crack for Man United. Man United will be made the favourites to win the Carabao Cup because of the history of the club.

"The media will say that Man United should win this cup but Newcastle are in fact the better team if you are looking at form. Newcastle very rarely concede goals and they never lose a game. They are a very tough opponent for every team in this country.
