Newcastle United headlines amid Tonali response and pre-season announcement

Here are your Newcastle United evening headlines on Friday, July 7.

Sandro Tonali's telling response to 'ambition' question as Newcastle ace delivers Eddie Howe verdict

Sandro Tonali admits he is coming to Newcastle United to win after receiving his first glimpses of what life will be like on Tyneside. The Italian, sat in front of a custom-made flag that read 'Forza Tonali', gave his first in-house interview to the Magpies this week, speaking in his native language.

Quizzed on his first visit to St James' Park, new boss Eddie Howe and his ambitions for life on Tyneside, Tonali's answers will be music to the ears of fans as he detailed his incredible determination to win at all costs.

"The ambition of every player is to come to a team and win," the 23-year-old said. "I believe the first thing you should do is never stop and then aim to win. This is everyone's goal, to try and win as soon as possible."

Meet the man behind the masterpiece returning to Newcastle stadium after 'torrid time' for club

Tony Britten thought he had seen it all. The man who wrote the Champions League anthem has watched Andrea Bocelli perform his masterpiece and even witnessed Cristiano Ronaldo mouth the iconic chorus before a huge game. But Sam Fender walking out at St James' Park to those familiar strains? That had never happened before.

"That was a first," Britten told ChronicleLive. "Goodness me - that's one to tell the grandchildren!"

Among those in attendance at Fender's gigs last month was Callum Wilson. A remarkable campaign had come to an end and the Newcastle number nine already knew he was now representing a Champions League club.

However, it was only when Wilson heard the anthem on that second night that it truly hit him. "I was like, ‘This is absolutely real,'" he recalled. “I could see how much it meant to everybody in the stadium."

Newcastle confirm pre-season tournament as women's side return to St James' Park

Newcastle United will play host to the very first 'Sela Cup' this summer, the club have announced. The Magpies will welcome Serie A side Fiorentina, French outfit Nice and La Liga club Villarreal to Tyneside for a mini tournament one week before the season gets under way.

Taking place over the weekend of Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th August, the Magpies will face Fiorentina and Villarreal over consecutive days. Becky Langley's Newcastle United Women will also be in action at the home of the men's side, playing West Bromwich Albion in their first game since turning professional earlier this summer.

Fans will be able to watch the earlier kick-offs on both days, with French side Nice playing Villarreal on Saturday and Fiorentina on Sunday. The event, Newcastle say, has been made possible due to the club's new front-of-shirt sponsor Sela and event sponsors VisitMalta.
