Newcastle United headlines ahead of midweek Everton clash amid pundit predictions

Here are your Newcastle United headlines on Wednesday, October 19.

Strange comebacks and Jordan Pickford's disaster - Five memorable Newcastle vs Everton clashes

From arguably Jordan Pickford’s worst day in football to one of the strangest comebacks in Premier League history and a goal for the ages . . . meetings between Newcastle and Everton rarely fail to entertain.

Ahead of Frank Lampard’s men arriving at St James’ Park tomorrow night, we take a look at some of the Magpies’ most memorable ever moments against the Toffees.

Paul Merson, Chris Sutton and Mark Lawrenson all make the same Newcastle vs Everton prediction

Newcastle United will look to extend their positive start to the season as they take on Everton at St James' Park. The Magpies have lost just once this season and will look for a win that will solidify their place in the Premier League's top six.

They welcome a Toffees side to Tyneside that had made a decent start to the season under Frank Lampard but have lost their last two Premier League matches.

The Magpies ran out 3-1 winners in this fixture last season in a game which really kickstarted their push towards comfortable Premier League survival.

This time around, Newcastle head into the clash as heavy favourites and that has been reflected in the predictions of pundits Paul Merson, Chris Sutton and Mark Lawrenson.

Jordan Pickford's history of mixed success at St James' Park

The closest Jordan Pickford ever got to a Tyne-Wear derby for Sunderland was three appearances against Newcastle United U21s, and an appearance on the bench in their 1-1 draw in 2016.

All four of his visits to St James' Park have come in his six years at Everton, and the former Black Cats star has endured mixed success against the Magpies.

There will be an extra incentive for Pickford to impress when Everton travel to St James' Park on Wednesday evening. Although Pickford appears to be leading the race for the England number one slot ahead of the World Cup, the Everton goalkeeper will be looking to lay down a marker in his battle with Nick Pope.

With that in mind, ChronicleLive has taken a look at his previous battles against the Magpies at St James' Park.

Newcastle United 'rattled' Liverpool and Man United on £200m journey but here's the real story

In the space of a week, Newcastle United's mere presence on the Premier League's big six scene appears to have ruffled more than a few feathers.

Manchester United, the club that brag they've "won it all" with a huge banner at Old Trafford, turned to foul means to try to beat Newcastle on Sunday and their meltdown after Ronaldo's ridiculous attempt to score was chalked off. Like Liverpool in August, the Red Devils are now facing an FA charge because of their conduct on match day.

That was after they'd brought Fergie out to gee the fans up after presenting awards on a day in which you just sensed Man United - for once - genuinely feared defeat against Newcastle. It was a day that felt like a game changer for those who have observed the Magpies for a long time.

Risky Sven Botman decision paying off with Newcastle United sooner than expected

Sven Botman's bold decision to snub Netherlands under-21 duty to focus on Newcastle United looks to be paying off sooner than anticipated after another stellar performance in black and white. The defender raised eyebrows in his native country by opting to return home without kicking a ball during the last international break as he battled for a place in Eddie Howe's defence.

Botman's reasoning for returning to the north east was to get up to speed with the English game as he challenged Dan Burn for the chance to partner Fabian Schar on Tyneside. Fast forward just a matter of weeks and it looks like an inspired decision from the 22-year-old, who is arguably now one of the first names on the team sheet at St James' Park.

Botman and Schar both enjoyed sublime performances at the heart of the Newcastle defence in the 0-0 draw with Manchester United, prompting praise from Howe in the aftermath. "My faith in him is huge," the Newcastle boss told reporters on Tuesday.
