Newcastle United handed FFP boost with Carabao Cup prize money but Premier League focus now clear

Newcastle United's run to the Carabao Cup Final has handed them a Financial Fair Play boost. The Magpies will take home £50,000 in prize money for finishing runners up in the competition, with Manchester United taking home double that - £100,000.

The prize money itself is often considered insignificant in comparison to winning the FA Cup - with a prize fund of £2million. Both prize pots are massively eclipsed by the Premier League's TV revenue, awarded on final league position, and then Champions League qualification.

The Magpies have dropped down to fifth in the table with Tottenham Hotspur moving into the Champions League places. Eddie Howe and his side have two games in hand on Antonio Conte's outfit and are four points adrift is Spurs.

The North London outfit still have to face the Magpies at St. James' Park, with the Toon's European destiny still in their own hands. If Manchester United finish in the top-four this season, their Europa Conference League spot will go to the highest placed team, that hasn't qualified for Europe.

Newcastle could be handed a further boost if the Red Devils, Spurs or Manchester City win the FA Cup and go on to finish in the top four. A win in the FA Cup would see the winners qualify automatically for the Europa League.

Again, if a team has already qualified for Europe next season, then the Europa League spot would go to the next highest placed side. In theory, finishing in seventh place could see the Toon qualify for the Europa Conference League and finishing in sixth, qualifying for the Europa League.

However, both the Newcastle board and Howe will be keen to avoid any hypothetical scenarios and boost their FFP by qualifying for the Champions League.
