Newcastle United goalkeeper joins newly promoted Gateshead on season-long loan

Newcastle United youngster Dan Langley has signed a season-long loan with newly promoted Gateshead for the 2022/23 campaign. The 21-year-old made his senior debut for the Magpies in pre-season last summer against York City.

The 6ft7 shot stopper was handed his debut after Karl Darlow tested positive for Covid-19 and Mark Gillespie and Freddie Woodman were forced to self isolate after being in close contact with the goalkeeper. Langley becomes Mike Williamson's fifth signing of the summer after the arrival of former Magpies youngster Tom Allan and former Sunderland defender Kenton Richardson.

The shot stopper was a regular for Newcastle's Under-23's side in the Premier League 2 last season and made two appearances in the Papa John's Trophy. The loan move is Langley's first foray into senior football having spent the majority of his Magpies career in the youth set-up.

Langley will provide competition for Gateshead keeper James Montgomery who has struggled with injury problems over the past two season.

“It’s been in the offing for a while,” Langley said. “I spoke to Bails [Owen Bailey] and he says great things about the club, the way it’s ran and the way it’s set up. The style of play suits me down to the ground. I would say I’m comfortable with the ball at my feet, under-23s football is very similar so it’s not like I’ve been shy of it for the time I’ve been playing, so hopefully I’ll be able to fit right in.”
