Freddie Woodman has joined AFC Bournemouth on loan until the end of the season.
His exit means that United's squad has at least opened up one space but Eddie Howe is facing a tough task to keep everybody happy as he is likely to be oversubscribed - and some players could end up without a squad slot.
Woodman was one of four goalkeepers registered by Newcastle at the start of the campaign due to a summer injury for Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow suffering from a lengthy bout of Covid.
The former England youth international was due to join the Cherries on loan last summer but the move was halted by Steve Bruce once Dubravka and Darlow's issues came to light.
Bruce then insisted he was doing what was best for United and Woodman played in the first handful of games last summer.
But since then he has slipped back down the pecking order to the senior stoppers.
He now heads to the south coast looking for regular first-team action and at 24 may also look at his long-term future.
Although a club statement read: "Woodman, 24, signed a new three-year contract with the Magpies last summer.
"Freddie will spend the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign with AFC Bournemouth after Newcastle United and the former England under-21 international agreed a loan deal with the Cherries."
Newcastle are hoping to conclude a couple more departures but face some hurdles on certain players.
Some don't want to move because they are settled in the area and others won't get their wages matched elsewhere.
