Emotional verdict from Newcastle Geordie duo Sean Longstaff and Dan Burn after 'special' night

Sean Longstaff has reflected on Newcastle United's glory night after helping the Magpies reach Wembley. The Geordie's two-goal salvo put them in a great position and despite Southampton pulling a goal back, Newcastle held on.

Longstaff said: "It’s a special night for everyone from Newcastle. It’s been such a long time since we’ve had a night like this.

"To spend it with our group and me and Burny [Dan Burn] being from around here it’s unbelievable.”

Fellow Geordie Dan Burn reflected: "I’ve never played in an atmosphere like that. Before the game I was getting emotional as the place was bouncing.

"It's hard to sum it up. I've never played in an atmosphere like that. I was getting emotional and had to hold myself together. We had to hold our nerve after letting them back in. It was disappointing to concede, he struck it well to be fair. They were always going to come at us second half but we stuck it out."

Eddie Howe's instant verdict was: "Team spirit and togetherness carries you a long way and we do have that at the moment. It’s my job to try and protect it, encourage it and increase it.

"I’ve got some brilliant professionals in that dressing room who have done the club proud this season.”
