Hereford United legend, and the man who scored one of the most iconic FA Cup goals in history against Newcastle United, Ronnie Radford has sadly passed away at the age of 79. The former midfielder is fondly remembered as the player who caused one of the biggest giant-killings in the competition's history with an audacious long-range effort against the Magpies back in 1972.
Radford's strike has since been shown on every FA Cup montage or introduction package for the last 50 years, with John Motson's iconic commentary irking Newcastle fans each and every year. The 2-1 Hereford win is itself remembered as one of the most surprising results in living memory.
Speaking about his iconic strike in 2018, Radford told the Daily Mirror: “I'll never forget the fantastic reception the Geordie fans gave us when our team coach pulled up outside the players' entrance. We had already been up there once and it was called off – it made us feel like they were thanking us for coming back.
“But we went toe-to-toe with Newcastle, under lights on a Monday night on their own patch. It was 2-2 by half-time and we matched them all the way. I will never grow tired of watching the replay, and what that goal did for a carpenter from Wakefield, but a giant-killing wouldn't have been possible without that performance in the first game.”
Hereford United confirmed the sad news of his passing on Wednesday afternoon, with a statement reading: “We are devastated to hear of Ronnie’s passing, and wish to extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends at this very sad time.
“Ronnie is not just a part of Hereford United folklore, he is a part of football history and has kept Hereford on the football map since 1972. His mild manner, and friendly and modest approach to life epitomised the man he was and he was always delighted to visit Edgar Street, to meet up with past teammates and watch the present day team in action.
“We will always keep Ronnie close to our hearts at Edgar Street, not just at FA Cup moments, but forever and celebrate him and his huge role in propelling Hereford United to the forefront of the nations attention with that goal and being part of that team. We will carry your spirit onwards. Rest in peace, Ronnie.”
