Newcastle United flop Seydou Doumbia sacked for reportedly refusing a coronavirus paycut

Former Newcastle United striker Seydou Doumbia has reportedly been sacked by latest club FC Sion for reportedly refusing a paycut following the suspension of the Swiss League.

The Ivorian was one of nine players to be dismissed including club captain Xavier Kouassi, former Fulham midfielder Patjum Kasami, and former Arsenal players Johan Djorou and Alex Song.

Ermir Lenjani, Mickaël Facchinetti, Birama Ndoye, and Christian Zock also had their contracts terminated with immediate effect.

Doumbia played just 29 minutes in black and white after arriving on loan from Roma during the 2015/16 season which finished with the Magpies suffering relegation.

Substitute appearances in defeats at Chelsea, Stoke and Leicester failed to yield a goal.

Loans to Basel and Sporting followed, before the striker departed on a permanent basis for La Liga outfit Girona.

However, Doumbia spent just one season in Spain and his contract was terminated after the club suffered relegation from the top flight.

The 32-year-old will now be on the lookout for a new club, having netted five times in 15 appearances for FC Sion.
