Newcastle United faithful struggle with Switzerland's Fabian Schar World Cup decision

Newcastle United's Fabian Schar will start Switzerland's World Cup opener against Cameroon on the bench.

The 30-year-old defender missed out on making Murat Yakin's starting line-up with the Swiss manager instead opting to select Borussia Mönchengladbach's Nico Elvedi ahead of Schar. Elvedi is partnered at centre-back by Manchester City's Manuel Akanji.

Given Schar is normally a regular starter for Switzerland, having amassed a whopping 73 caps for his country, the decision not to start him is an interesting one.

Heading into the 2022 World Cup, the third of Schar's career, the Magpies defender has been in the form of his life, helping Newcastle to record the joint best defensive record in the Premier League so far this season.

Alongside Sven Botman, Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier, Newcastle have conceded just 11 goals this term, which is matched only by league leaders Arsenal.

And it's safe to say Newcastle supporters have been left bemussed by the decision to omit Schar from Switzerland's starting line-up for their clash against Cameroon...
