Newcastle United evening headlines with Joao Pedro transfer latest and Christian Pulisic boost

Joao Pedro is interested in a move to Newcastle United but Watford are keen to keep hold of the forward. Elsewhere, Chelsea are open to allowing Christian Pulisic to leave this window.

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for August 16.

Pedro latest

Joao Pedro is interested in a move to Newcastle United but Watford are adamant the forward is going nowhere after turning down the Magpies' opening offer.

ChronicleLive understands Pedro would, unsurprisingly, be open to returning to the Premier League with Newcastle but the Brazilian is not the sort of character who will push for the move as the Hornets prepare to face Birmingham City on Tuesday night. A senior Watford source, meanwhile, told ChronicleLive that 'we have made our position very clear' when it comes to Pedro not being for sale.

Newcastle now have to weigh up whether to test that stance again with an improved offer after having a bid in the region of £20m rejected for Pedro, who still has nearly five years left on his contract.

Pulisic boost

Chelsea are open to allowing Christian Pulisic to leave Stamford Bridge before the end of the summer transfer window, Chronicle Live understands. The American attacker is one of many names Newcastle United are watching as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his Magpies side.

Pulisic has failed to hold down a regular first-team spot since joining Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund for £57.6m in January 2019. The 23-year-old has also had to settle for a place on the bench in the west London club's opening two Premier League fixtures this term.

Newcastle have enquired over Pulisic's availability after Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi's trip to watch Chelsea on Sunday afternoon. Callum Hudson-Odoi, Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja are other Blues players on the club's radar.

PIF investment

Newcastle United and Chelsea's part-owners have invested £747m in a luxury hotel group as the links between the respective boardrooms are strengthened further away from the game.

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) have teamed up with Cain International to support the Aman Group's 'global expansion of ultra-luxury hotels and branded residences'. The PIF, of course, own an 80% majority stake in Newcastle while Jonathan Goldstein, the CEO of Cain International, is one of Chelsea's co-owners. Todd Boehly, the Chelsea chairman, also sits on the Cain board.

Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Newcastle's non-executive chairman, is the governor of the PIF and his deputy, Turqi Alnowaiser, said this $900m (£747m) investment was 'in line with the PIF's strategy to invest in promising sectors to achieve sustainable, attractive returns'. The Aman Group has 34 hotels in 20 countries and another nine properties in development, including in Saudi.

Carrick appointment

Newcastle United have announced the appointment of Graeme Carrick as the club's new U18s coach. The younger brother of former England and Manchester United star Michael will take up the vacant post in the Magpies academy in what has been labelled a 'significant' hire.

The pair were both born in Wallsend, and Graeme joined his brother in West Ham's youth setup before injury ended his hopes of becoming a professional footballer. The 37-year-old has previously worked in a part-time coaching role with Newcastle from 2005 until 2007, before spending 15 years working as a coach developer with the FA.

Carrick will take the U18s post previously held by Peter Ramage, with the former Magpies defender now assisting Shola Ameobi as the club's player loan co-ordinator. Academy boss Steve Harper has revealed his delight at the appointment, insisting the new coach's 'passion' for developing players on and off the pitch earned him the role.

Ndiweni 'mistake'

Promising Newcastle United striker Michael Ndiweni needs to learn from his 'mistake' after being sent off in his first start of the season. That is the view of U21 head coach Elliott Dickman, who feels the teenage forward needs to learn from the 'harsh' dismissal.

The young Magpies were reduced to nine men as they lost their second straight match of the campaign on Monday night. Ben Kershaw's stunning long-range strike decided the match, although the hosts did continue to push for an equaliser despite the red cards for both Ndiweni and Matty Bondswell.

Ndiweni scored off the bench in the opening-day defeat to West Brom, and was rewarded with a start alongside Santiago Munoz. The 18-year-old was booked in the first-half after sliding for the ball and accidentally colliding with Daniel Malone.

Dickman made two changes at the break in an attempt to galvanise a response from his side, with Jay Turner-Cooke pushed up to support Ndiweni as a lone frontman. However, the Magpies U21 boss was forced into another reshuffle minutes after the restart when his striker was given a second yellow for a mistimed attempt to close down goalkeeper Blondy Nna Noukeu.

Targett return

Matt Targett will be carefully assessed through the week ahead of Newcastle United's clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

The former Aston Villa star missed the 0-0 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion and was in contention right up until the day of the game, even travelling to the South Coast with the team and being part of the match day squad. But Targett was left on the sidelines as a precaution at the Amex Stadium.

Targett had suffered a dead leg in the 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest and underwent a scan but Howe opted to play Dan Burn at left-back.
