Newcastle United evening headlines: Premier League latest following the death of Queen Elizabeth II

A look at the latest Newcastle United evening headlines on Friday, 9 September.

‘An opportunity missed’ - Football Supporters’ Association on decision to postpone football schedule

The Football Supporters' Association have questioned the decision to postpone professional football following Queen Elizabeth II’s death. A statement from the Premier League this afternoon confirmed that no fixtures will take place to honour Her Majesty’s passing.

UK Government advice stated there was “no obligation” for sporting events to be cancelled. Decisions to cancel or postpone events would be left at the discretion of organisations - and not enforced by the state.

However, after discussions with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, top-flight and EFL chiefs have decided to rearrange all games for a later date. Other sports, like cricket and rugby, will continue to be contested over the weekend.

Former Newcastle United defender Davide Santon announces retirement at 31

Davide Santon has been forced to announce an early retirement from professional football. The 31-year-old was part of the side that finished fifth in the Premier League under Alan Pardew in 2011-12.

Arriving from Inter Milan for £5million, the Italian was tasked with replacing Jose Enrique - who had recently left for Liverpool. Newcastle United fans were impressed with Santon’s marauding runs from left-back and he quickly became a first-team stalwart.

However, a knee injury caused him to lose his place to the more defensively-astute Paul Dummett in 2014 - and his career never recovered. Despite a move back to Inter Milan, Santon's knee troubles continued to plague him and he never made more than 17 league appearances in a single season again.

When Newcastle vs West Ham may be played and when Magpies could return to Premier League action

Newcastle United's scheduled clash with West Ham United this Sunday has been postponed following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Premier League confirmed the news on Friday morning, announcing all top flight football would be cancelled in the coming days as a mark of respect.

English clubs have a tight schedule to adhere to this season with the 2022 World Cup wreaking havoc with the domestic schedule. As such, it is now unlikely to the Magpies will face their east London counterparts until after the Qatar showpiece has concluded.

The next available midweek date for Premier League games to be played looks to be in January, with the upcoming international break, European competitions and Carabao Cup fixtures making it difficult to fit extra games in before the turn of the year.

When Queen Elizabeth II presented Newcastle United the FA Cup trophy in 1955

For most Britons, Queen Elizabeth II is the only head of state they have ever known. UK and Commonwealth nations are mourning after the passing of Her Majesty on Thursday afternoon.

Little over 70 years ago, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch ascended to the throne following the death of her father, George VI. Only those over 80 likely have any recollection of the UK without its Queen.

The same logic could be applied to the last time Newcastle won a domestic trophy. It has been 67 years since the Magpies lifted the FA Cup on May 7, 1955.

Jackie Milburn, George Robledo & Joe Harvey: The Newcastle United line-up after Queen Elizabeth II coronation

On February 6, 1952, Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne following the death of her father, George VI. A little over 70 years on and the United Kingdom is mourning after the death of the nation’s longest-reigning monarch.

Life on Tyneside, both on and off the pitch, has changed a lot since her coronation - held almost one year later - in June 1953. Shipbuilding was still prevalent on the River Tyne, albeit a fading industry was approaching its twilight years as a notable decline had taken place from previous decades.

At St James’ Park, a successful post-war rebuild saw Newcastle United emerge as one of England’s top sides. Back-to-back FA Cup wins in 1951 and 1952 would be replicated with another triumph in 1955. In the latter, the trophy was presented by the Queen when her reign was still in its infancy.
