Newcastle United evening headlines: Joelinton and Bruno run riot to end Carrow Road hoodoo

A round-up of the latest Newcastle United evening headlines.

Newcastle told Miguel Almiron remains 'surplus to requirements' despite Crystal Palace winner

Miguel Almiron still remains 'surplus to requirements' at Newcastle United despite his stunning matchwinning goal against Crystal Palace. That is the view of former Magpies defender Steve Howey, who does not feel the Paraguay international's future lies at St James' Park.

The former club-record signing has struggled for game-time under Eddie Howe, but has impressed in recent displays having been selected to replace the injured Ryan Fraser. Almiron scored his first goal in black-and-white since February 2020 in Wednesday's win against Palace, beating Vicente Guaita with a powerful strike from a tight angle.

Howey previously stated it would be a 'surprise' if the former Atlanta United playmaker was still on Tyneside next season, and described his time at the club so far as 'frustrating'. Almiron's performances in recent outings has led some to suggest he could remain a part of Howe's plans beyond the summer, but the pundit insists the 28-year-old does not possess the final ball or consistency required.

Norwich 0-3 Newcastle United: It was just like watching Brazil at Carrow Road

Newcastle United strolled to a comfortable victory in the Norfolk sunshine and made a remarkable climb into the top 10 of the Premier League. Eddie Howe's side sit ninth and at times made it look easy against the Canaries.

The points were effectively in the bag by the 49th minute on a day in which Brazilian duo Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton did the damage at Carrow Road against the doomed Canaries. Norwich may have been the side in yellow but Newcastle were the team playing like Brazil!

With Brazil flags flying in the away end, Newcastle's South American pair were the toast of Tyneside tonight as United made it four wins in a row. There has been talk of Howe getting manager of the season of late and on this evidence that's far from an unfair suggestion given the turnaround in fortunes.

Rafa Benitez has hinted that he was approached by Newcastle United to replace Steve Bruce as the club’s manager following the takeover last year. The former Magpies boss was the most popular choice among a large proportion of the Toon Army but his contract with Everton, at the time, put paid to any chance of a sensational return.

He remains a much-loved figure at St James’ Park for the role he played during arguably the club’s lowest moment under Mike Ashley. In an interview with Alan Shearer in The Athletic, the pair alluded to the fact he was in the running for the manager’s job after Bruce’s departure.

After Shearer claimed that ‘a speculative call went out to Rafa or people close to him’, Benitez responded by saying: “The directors of Everton were worried about what the press were saying, but I told them, ‘Listen, if I give my word, I will try to do my best until the end.’
