Newcastle United evening headlines: Bruno DVD revelation, Frank honesty and Howe relief

Your Newcastle United headlines for Sunday, October 9.

Bruno thanks Howe

Bruno Guimaraes has praised Eddie Howe for helping him add a new dimension to his game - heading! The Brazilian bagged a brace against Brentford on Saturday, with his opener a header after a clever set-piece routine.

Speaking after the game, Guimaraes revealed how the Toon boss made him conscious of his heading ability - or lack thereof - when he signed in January. The last-minute strike against Leicester City was Guimaraes’ first headed goal in Newcastle colours.

“The gaffer has put in big work,” he said. “Because when I arrived here he said 'Bruno, when I watched your DVD you never score with your head. I will work with you and you'll score with your head.’

"After this, I scored two goals! Thanks gaffer, you're important to my life and I want to keep going with this. I'm really very happy with the best days in my life and thank God for this.

"I think it was important in the last game against Fulham, important for the confidence in the boys and today as well," Bruno added. "An Amazing day for me, I'm very proud of the boys, of the gaffer - we worked a lot this week on pressing up (the field).

"We recovered two balls in their box and we scored two goals. I'm very grateful for the boys."

Frank honesty

Thomas Frank has admitted it would be “pathetic” to complain about Brentford rightly having a goal disallowed against Newcastle after his side went on to lose the game 5-1.

Brentford appeared to land the first blow at St James' Park on Saturday when Bryan Mbeumo had the ball in the net in the 11th minute. John Brooks gave the goal, but VAR quickly intervened and the referee went over to his pitchside monitor to take a second look, which is always a tell-tale sign.

"I'm a big believer that, if you lose 5-1, never complain about a disallowed goal," the Brentford boss told reporters. "I think that is pathetic if you do that as a player or a coach.

"That said, I understand where you're coming from because the first goal in a game means a lot. It popped into my head when we scored: 13 times we went in front in the Premier League and we won 11 of them and drew the other two. But, looking back on it, I agree with the decision. It was offside."

Howe happy with Premier League table

Howe admitted that the Premier League table has a better feel to it after Newcastle managed back-to-back wins against Fulham and Brentford.

The Toon boss thinks those two priceless victories have cancelled out the home draws against Bournemouth and Crystal Palace. United have lost just once in the Premier League and have 14 points on the board after nine games.

"I think the complexion has changed off the back of the last two results,” Howe said. “We were well aware that those draws we got earlier in the season were going to be judged on what we did after, not necessarily at the time.

"They’re good points if you then go and win, but they’re disappointing points if you don’t. Thankfully, we’ve gone back to back and won the games we needed to."
