A look at the latest Newcastle United headlines on Wednesday, November 9.
Newcastle United defender Dan Burn responds to England World Cup links
Newcastle United defender Dan Burn wasn't lacking in confidence when he was asked about representing England at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Burn has suddenly entered the England World Cup conservation following the recent injury to Ben Chilwell. The Chelsea left-back is expected to miss this winter's tournament in Qatar, after he tore his hamstring in Chelsea's victory over Red Bull Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League.
There is also uncertainty surrounding the fitness of Reece James, Kyle Walker and Kyle Walker-Peters heading into the tournament, and Burn's versatility could prove a useful tool. Burn admits that he would be 'surprised' if he was named in Gareth Southgate's squad but argues that there are few left-sided defenders in better form than him at the moment.
Newcastle United owners inject further funds into club in major cash boost
Newcastle United have been handed a major cash boost after its investors injected further equity into the club. The Magpies have pledged further investment moving forward as they look to rebuild the club after years of decline under Mike Ashley.
A United statement read: “The ownership group, comprising PIF, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media, has invested a further £70.4 million of equity into Newcastle United FC. This investment brings the ownership group’s investment to date to over £450 million.
“The capital injection follows a wide range of investments in the club that has seen an upgrade of training facilities, improvements to St. James’ Park and recruitment of a number of senior executives to build out the commercial operations of the club, as well as investment in the playing squad.
Crystal Palace injuries and predicted starting XI ahead of midweek Newcastle United Carabao Cup tie
Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira insists the Eagles will take their Carabao Cup clash against Newcastle United on Wednesday evening seriously.
The Eagles head into the contest at St James' Park in relatively good health, with James McArthur and Christopher Richards their only long-term injury concerns.
Forward Odsonne Edouard missed Palace's weekend 2-1 win over West Ham but could be back in contention for the game against the Magpies.
Karl Darlow in contention for Newcastle's tie with Crystal Palace - and Martin Dubravka future hint
Eddie Howe is pondering making a change in goal ahead of tonight's home clash with Crystal Palace.
The Magpies played Karl Darlow in the 2-1 win at Tranmere Rovers in the last round before the long-serving stopper picked up an ankle injury. Howe then signed former Liverpool stopper Loris Karius but the 29-year-old is yet to feature.
Nick Pope has been outstanding between the posts for Newcastle this season and would still be keen to help the club progress in the cup. Howe kept his team under wraps when asked about the keepers tonight.
Newcastle legend fires back at Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool transfer spend after 'no ceiling' row
Shay Given believes Newcastle United are 'ruffling a few feathers' sooner than expected and has fired back at Jurgen Klopp following the 'no ceiling' row. The Magpies legend has pointed to the deals for Alisson, Darwin Nunez and Virgil van Dijk as proof of the Liverpool boss not being 'frightened' to spend.
Klopp made the jibe last month after picking up on sporting director's Dan Ashworth comments on Newcastle's ambitions under the new owners. The takeover has led to a transfer spend in excess of £200 million in a calendar year, and Eddie Howe has quickly transformed the club from relegation favourites to potential Champions League contenders.
The Magpies currently sit eight points clear of Liverpool - although the Reds do have a game in hand - but suffered their only defeat of the season in controversial circumstances at Anfield in August. Klopp has recently revealed his fear that his side's inconsistency this term could put their place in next season's Champions League at risk.
Full transcript of Alan Shearer's talkSPORT interview as Newcastle legend talks Howe and top four
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has given his verdict on the Magpies' top-four prospects in an interview on talkSPORT. The club's all-time leading goalscorer has regularly praised Eddie Howe and his former side this season on BBC's Match of the Day and his column for The Athletic.
Shearer admits he had expected Newcastle to be relegated considering their position at Christmas last year. The pundit reckons Kieran Trippier has proven to be the 'key signing', while also praising the likes of Joelinton and Nick Pope.
Newcastle's legendary number nine does not believe Howe's side will hold on to their current top-four spot, although he reckons this stance could change dependent on the club's January transfer business. Here is everything he had to say on Newcastle in interview with Ally McCoist, Stuart Pearce and Laura Woods.
Bruno Guimaraes opens up on Newcastle United ‘dream’ and Geordie accent struggles
Bruno Guimaraes has admitted he struggles to understand Newcastle United supporters because of their “heavy” local dialect. Fans have been stunned by the Brazilian’s efforts both on and off the pitch since his big-money move in January.
Unable to speak a word of English on arrival, the 24-year-old continues to take lessons and updates supporters of his progress on social media. Astonishingly, after less than three months on Tyneside, Guimaraes conducted a post-match interview following his last-gasp winner against Leicester City.
The midfielder has endeared himself to Toon supporters for his on-field displays, too. Another goal in the 4-1 win over Southampton on Sunday - a superb strike from 25 yards out - is the latest moment in an ever-growing highlight reel.
