Newcastle United evening headlines as late Alexander Isak winner sends Magpies back to third

Here are your Newcastle United evening headlines on Sunday, 15 January.

Newcastle United 1-0 Fulham: Alexander Isak nicks it after Aleksandar Mitrovic penalty howler

Newcastle United stayed on course for Champions League contention with a vital and last gasp victory over Fulham at St James' Park.

On a day in which old boy Aleksandar Mitrovic fluffed his lines from the spot, it was left to £63million man Alexander Isak to grab some glory at the Gallowgate End as he pounced late on to a win which lifts Newcastle back into third place in the Premier League.

This victory may not have been as spectacular as some wins this season but in the fight for European football, these are the afternoons in which you have to hang in there. And Newcastle did that with style to march on to 38 points in the table.

Eddie Howe provides Bruno Guimaraes update after Brazilian midfielder hobbles off at half-time against Fulham

Bruno Guimaraes' injury against Fulham could change Newcastle United's transfer plans in the January window.

The Brazil international left St James' Park on crutches and with his right foot in a protective boot after rolling his ankle in the first half against the Cottagers.

On day which ended on a high after Newcastle grabbed three points, the aftermath of his injury will now unfold and action on the recruitment front, with Jonjo Shelvey already injured, could now unfold.

Eddie Howe said: “He was in distress, and he was worried about his ankle after the game too. It was a twist. He felt he could carry on until right at the end of the first half when he signalled to come off.

"That’s never a good sign from our perspective, and we’ll have to get it scanned and checked out, and see what the damage is. We hope it’s not long term, but at this moment in time, we don’t know."

Alan Shearer heaps praise on Sean Longstaff as Newcastle United claim 1-0 win against Fulham

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has praised midfielder Sean Longstaff for his performance in the Magpies 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday afternoon.

With Bruno Guimaraes having to go off at half time after sustaining an ankle injury, it meant Longstaff had to move into the deeper number six role against Fulham.

It was Longstaff's lofted ball into the box late on which led to Newcastle's dramatic winner. The midfielder clipped a ball towards striker Callum Wilson, who then managed to dink a cross into the path of an unmarked Alexander Isak to head home.

And taking to Twitter after the game, Shearer praised Longstaff, calling him 'Man of the Match'.
