Newcastle United dressing room confidence admission after much-needed Leeds United victory

Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka says the victory over Leeds United can act as the confidence booster the squad needed.

Newcastle United travelled to Elland Road with few expecting a win, especially after the side had lost to Cambridge United and failed to retain a lead over Watford.

However, there was a far greater attacking impetus from the Magpies, even after they took the lead, with the habit of sitting back being one that boss Eddie Howe is trying to eradicate.

Speaking after the match, Martin Dubravka told the club’s website: "We really needed this win to lift our confidence.

“I think I we deserved it because the work ethic we showed on the pitch today was great. We created some good chances and I'm happy that we scored a goal to win us the game.

"You need to have that little bit of luck sometimes, but I think we deserved it because we worked so hard in the build-up to the game and then made it count. That is the most important thing.

“It's a massive three points. It is crucial that we stick together. We go game by game because this is the Premier League and you always have to be focused on the next game.

"It's good that we have a few weeks off now because a few players picked up some injuries. Hopefully, they will have enough time to recover.”

The 33-year-old, who himself put in a great performance, also reflected on the 1-1 draw with Watford, when Newcastle failed to hang on to the lead.

He said: "I don't know if we were afraid or scared because we were leading and it was disappointing not to win.”

Newcastle now travel to Saudi Arabia for a mid-season break.
