Newcastle United credited with an interest in FC Porto’s Zaidu Sanusi and Benfica’s Álex Grimaldo

Newcastle are interested in signing either Porto’s Zaidu Sanusi or Benfica’s Álex Grimaldo, according to Portuguese outlet Jornal de Notícias.

A left-back is rumoured to be on the Magpies’ radar as Paul Dummett and Jamal Lewis are in and out of the team due to injury and Matt Ritchie - who has covered the position for most of the season - is naturally a winger.

Eddie Howe is desperate for defensive recruitments to help bolster a side that has already conceded 43 goals in the Premier League.

The Magpies were reportedly chasing Atalanta’s Robin Gosens but talk has cooled, with various outlets suggesting Newcastle were willing to triple the German’s wages.

This new report claims Toon chiefs are keeping tabs on Sanusi and Grimaldo - who is also attracting interest from former club Barcelona.

Both players’ contracts run out in 2025 and 2023 respectively, meaning Porto would command a substantial fee to part ways with their first-choice left-back.

Spaniard Grimaldo has been a revelation since leaving the Nou Camp to join Benfica in 2016.

The 26-year-old has played almost 250 games for the Portuguese giants and started every game of their Champions League campaign this season.

His teammate, Darwin Nunez, is also linked with a move to Tyneside, with his 20 goals this season making him one of the hottest properties in Europe.
