Newcastle United could be set for windfall if Brentford striker Ivan Toney moves this summer

Newcastle United could be set for a nice payday if former Magpies striker Ivan Toney leaves Brentford this summer.

Toney joined Newcastle in 2015 from Northampton Town, and the striker only went on to make two first-team appearances for the Magpies, going out on loan to a number of Football League sides to gain experience. Newcastle sold Toney to Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee in 2018, and he earned himself a big transfer after impressing in League One.

Toney moved to Brentford from Peterborough in 2020, with Peterborough co-chairman Stewart Thompson telling the Peterborough Telegraph that Posh would be due 30% of any future fee Brentford receive for selling the player.

However, if the 26-year-old was to move on, 30% of Peterborough's cut of the deal would be due to Newcastle.

“Sell ons for large transfers are never that much to be fair," said Peterborough chairman Darragh McAnthony on Twitter. "We would do ok from any deal, but also have to give Newcastle a percentage of it. I’d be surprised if he did move it would be for so little though!”

A number of Premier League clubs, including Newcastle, have been linked with a move for Toney this summer. Brentford's star man scored 12 goals for the Bees in the Premier League last season.
