Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe responds to Manchester United interest in Martin Dubravka

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has insisted that Martin Dubravka missed the League Cup win at Tranmere due to an illness.

The Slovakia international goalkeeper was linked with Manchester United in the direct aftermath of the game after Karl Darlow deputised for Nick Pope at Prenton Park. Dubravka has been moved down the pecking order by Howe after the arrival of the England keeper.

But when asked if there was anything in the Man United links, Howe said: "He was feeling a little bit unwell. That’s it. In terms of anything (else) with Martin, I don't know about that."

Dubravka was in training on the eve of the game but shortly after the team sheets were released on the Wirral it emerged that he had been feeling under the weather. Dubravka's agent had promised to look for a new club in the current window if the ex-Sparta Prague star was not in the team.

Howe was a happy man as he left Prenton Park last night with transfer business soon to be concluded and Newcastle safely into round three of the cup.

He said: "They were very good defensively and physically. "It was a good examination of our attitude, our organisation and our commitment, and the lads passed the test with flying colours. They managed a difficult last 20 minutes superbly."
