Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers keen on Irish League teen

A number of English Premier League clubs are leading the chase for Irish League youngster Corey Smith.

The Dungannon Swifts winger has emerged as a leading prospect this season and scored his first senior goal in last Friday's 1-1 draw with Glenavon.

Smith, 18, recently signed an improved contract with Dungannon after making nine first-team appearances from the bench in 2022/23.

The talented teenager has primarily featured for the club's Under 20s side this season, with senior boss Dean Shiels describing Smith as being "unplayable" in many of his appearances.

Those displays have earned Smith plenty of attention from clubs across the water, and it it is understood that both Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have made moves for the Northern Ireland youth international.

Reflecting on Smith's new contract, Shiels told Dungannon's YouTube channel : "I think Corey is one of a number of talented players at the club that we're delighted to tie down. He deserves his new contract.

"He has sometimes been unplayable in the Under 20 games this season. He has got that talent where he can go one vs one. We want wide players to attack and score goals, and he is exactly the type of player we're delighted to have at the club.

"As you saw against Glenavon, coming on and scoring. He is going to be a big player for this club going forward."
