Trippier outstanding, Bruno Champions League class: Newcastle United 2-0 Man United player ratings

Newcastle United stormed to third place in the Premier League after a super 2-0 win over Manchester United at St James' Park.

It took goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson to put Erik Ten Hag's men to the sword in front of a raucous sold out crowd in the Premier League.

On a day in which there were many contenders for man of the match, Newcastle put in one of their best shows of the season.

How the players rated overall:

Nick Pope 7

Faced just one shot on target but kept his cool in the testing moments at 1-0 and went on to keep a deserved clean sheet.

Kieran Trippier 9

An outstanding display as he bombarded Man United's defence with a host of crosses and then put the lid on things with an assist for Callum Wilson. Hauled Newcastle over the line as man of the match.

Fabian Schar 8

Suffered his fair share of knocks for the cause. But kept going to put in a steely display.

Sven Botman 8

Erased memories of the Carabao Cup final with a strong performance. Some excellent interceptions.

Dan Burn 8

Set the tone with a monster challenge on Marcus Rashford in the first half. That was one of half a dozen important challenges.

Bruno Guimaraes 8

A display fit for the Champions League. Vital moment for the opening goal with superb hanging cross.

Sean Longstaff 7

Saw an early first chance blocked. And then one flew just wide but grew in stature

Joe Willock 8

Missed two great chances in the first half but made amends after the break by guiding home the opener.

Allan Saint-Maximin 8

An excellent display as he tested the Man United defence from the word go. Some dangerous moments but most importantly he laid on the assist for Willock's opener. Had 38 touches in all.

Jacob Murphy 7

Gave it his best shot in hard working display before being replaced.

Alexander Isak 8

Started the move that led to the goal. Nothing in the bank in terms of goals himself but an almighty presence.

Subs

Joelinton 7 (for Saint-Maximin 67)

Surprisingly named as sub. Did well when he came on and hit the bar.

Anthony Gordon 7 (for Murphy 67)

Some dangerous moments.

Callum Wilson (for Isak 79)

Elliot Anderson (for Willock 83)

*Subs must play 15 minutes of regulation time to earn a mark.
