Newcastle transfer rumours with James Maddison price tag and Kalvin Phillips 'setback'

Here is your latest 4am Newcastle United transfer digest.

Maddison price tag

James Maddison seems almost certain to leave Leicester City this summer following their relegation. The England international will enter the final year of his contract with the Foxes, and Newcastle and Tottenham are considered the frontrunners for his signature.

However, Leicester are seemingly not set to sanction a cut-price exit despite this contract status leaving them vulnerable. The Athletic report the former Premier League champions will demand a £40 million fee in order to sanction Maddison's sale.

Newcastle failed with two bids for the playmaker last summer, and will at the very least be tempted to revisit this interest. Yet with talk of a prospective bidding war raising this price tag even further, it may not be the value deal the Magpies initially anticipated.

Phillips 'setback'

Kalvin Phillips was one of two Leeds United players linked with St James' Park last summer, with former team-mate Raphinha making the move to Barcelona. The England midfielder agreed a switch to Manchester City, but has hardly featured this term for Pep Guardiola's side.

Newcastle are in the market for reinforcements in the centre of the park, and have reportedly sounded out the prospect of a deal for Phillips. However, the Telegraph claim the 27-year-old is determined to stay at the Etihad and prove himself with the potential treble winners.
