Newcastle transfer news: Eddie Howe 'ready to break transfer record' for Lucas Paqueta

Newcastle United are readying a £50m bid for Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta, according to reports.

The Toon are ready to splash the cash again in their first summer transfer window since being taken over by Saudi Arabia's PIF. Defensive reinforcements are also being eyed, with Atletico Madrid full-back Renan Lodi believed to be on Eddie Howe's radar.

And that could have a knock-on effect for Matt Targett, who has impressed since joining on loan from Aston Villa in January. Read on for more Newcastle United transfer rumours.

Toon ready to spend £50m on Paqueta

Newcastle want to make Lyon star Lucas Paqueta their marquee signing of the summer and are preparing a £50m bid.

The Times claim How is keen to create an all-Brazilian midfield trio of Paqueta, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes as he looks to take the Toon to the next level.

And negotiations for the 24-year-old, who scored nine goals in 35 Ligue 1 appearances last term, could be smoothed by the fact he is represented by the same agent as his compatriot Bruno.

Lodi emerges as left-back target

Defensive reinforcements are also on the agenda for Howe, with Atletico Madrid defender Renan Lodi one potential target.

According to the i, the Brazil international is open to the idea of a move to the North East after three seasons in the Spanish capital. He has been a regular under Diego Simeone and played a key role in Atleti's 2020-21 La Liga title success.

Targett awaits decision

Of course, should Lodi sign then it is likely to mean an end to fellow left-back Targett's hopes of remaining on Tyneside.

The Birmingham Mail report that the Aston Villa man is still waiting on a decision from Newcastle over whether his loan switch will be made permanent.

A snub from the Toon could leave Targett searching for a club with Lucas Digne having locked down the Villa left-back spot since his January arrival.
