Newcastle to 'renew' interest in Woodgate favourite and £295m January transfer 'domino' claim

Here is your 4am Newcastle United transfer digest.

Kelly interest?

Eddie Howe managed to bring in the defensive reinforcements he craved as Dan Burn and Matt Targett agreed moves on deadline day.

The Magpies had previously failed in pursuits for Sven Botman and Diego Carlos of Lille and Sevilla respectively, and were unsurprisingly linked to a host of other names.

Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly was among those mentioned with a prospective St James' Park switch, and the Sunday Mirror claim United could renew their interest in the 23-year-old in the summer.

However, any potential deal for the former England under-21 international will likely swing on the league status of both the Cherries and Newcastle, with Scott Parker's side pushing for promotion.

Howe signed Kelly from Bristol City in 2019, and former Magpies defender Jonathan Woodgate described the player as a 'Rolls Royce' during his interim spell in charge on the south coast.

£295m claim

Newcastle's January transfer spending spree was the 'domino' which led to Premier League clubs spending £295m in the the mid-season window.

That is the view of football finance expert Kieran Maguire, who told Football Insider that the Magpies' business led to a 'ripple effect' across the division.

He said: “From the position of Newcastle, I’m not a fan of trickle-down economics but we have seen a domino effect.

“They have bought Chris Wood, so Burnley have gone and signed a striker. They have signed Dan Burn, so Brighton have gone out and signed someone.

“If you spend money, it often becomes one out, one in. So it will ripple through the transfer market.

“With Newcastle, it’s the case that there is a new kid in town and that kicks off this domino effect.

“However, it should also be noted that there are an awful lot of clubs, seven or eight, that haven’t spent a bean.”
