Newcastle supremo Dan Ashworth in stands as Sven Botman stars for Holland U21s

Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth was an interested spectator as Sven Botman helped Holland Under-21s to a narrow win over Wales Under-21s.

Ashworth rounded off his first week in charge by taking his place in the stands at Parc-Y-Scarlets in Llanelli as Lutsharel Geertruida grabbed a late winner. By that time Botman - who Newcastle are believed to have discussed a £46million offer for with Lille - had left the field, coming off at half-time.

And while Ashworth will have understandably have had a keen eye on Botman the main purpose of his visit was because his son Zac Ashworth was in the squad with Wales. The West Brom left-back though did not get a slice of the action for Paul Bodin's side.

An intriguing week now lies ahead in the Botman saga with the centre-half now planning to get his future thrashed out before heading away on holiday. On Friday night, Italian TV channels were reporting that AC Milan had walked away from the deal after Newcastle's latest bumper bid.

The Magpies have maintained a dignified silence over the weekend and are staying focused on recruitment after signing Matt Targett last week from Aston Villa for £15million.
