Newcastle strike late to earn 2-2 draw at Perth Glory

Reno Piscopo has scored one of the goals of the season to help a resurgent Newcastle draw 2-2 with Perth Glory in a hot-tempered ALM clash.

Piscopo's 58th-minute stunner silenced the Glory faithful at Macedonia Park on Saturday night before Archie Goodwin's late header off the bench ensured the Jets escaped with a point.

The hosts will be left to lament a missed David Williams penalty and an 88th-minute defensive breakdown which allowed Trent Buhagiar to pounce on a loose ball in the box and find the unmarked Goodwin.

Glory substitute Adam Taggart threatened a stoppage-time winner after surging through the middle but his shot from outside the box gave Jets goalkeeper Jack Duncan little to worry about.

It continues a return to form for Newcastle, who are unbeaten in four games following a 4-0 win over Brisbane last week.

Piscopo consolidated a dominant period for the visitors after halftime when he received the ball on the edge of the box after a one-two with Beka Mikeltadze and fired a rocket into the top right-hand corner.

Perth regained the lead in the 79th minute courtesy of a Ryan Beevers header and will be bitterly disappointed not to have secured a victory which would have propelled them into the top six, having sat bottom of the ladder a month prior.

"I thought the game should have been buried, to be honest, at halftime," Perth coach Ruben Zadkovich said.

"We missed some real clear-cut chances ... we peppered them and probably should have won."

Zadkovich was unsure of the extent of an injury to captain Mustafa Amini, who was substituted late after appearing to tweak his hamstring.

With drinks breaks taken at 15-minute intervals on a stifling Perth evening, tempers threatened to boil over during a testy first half.

Luke Bodnar and Keegan Jelacic each received yellow cards for separate challenges before a fracas broke out on the verge of halftime when Cameron Cook's one-handed save denied Jason Hoffman a stoppage-time equaliser.

Bodnar had minutes earlier scored his first ALM goal after getting on the end of a Jelacic cross and heading it home from the far post.

It was welcome relief for the hosts after they failed to capitalise on several prime opportunities.

Daryl Lachman's scorching run after winning possession in his own half should have ended in a goal but his shot drifted wide of the right post.

Duncan's superb reflex save in the 27th minute then kept out a close-range volley from Jelacic, who got on the end of an incisive Ryan Williams cross.

Duncan was the hero for the Jets again moments later, diving low to his right to prod away a David Williams penalty after Jelacic was brought down in the box by Daniel Stynes.

Coach Arthur Papas was pleased with the Jets' endeavour and resolve to respond after halftime.

"It's not easy to go behind here. It's proven to be a very difficult place," he said.

"I can only praise my players for the way they worked and kept believing and to come away with something is very important for us."

Glory remain unbeaten at their adopted home ground, where they will host ladder-leaders Melbourne City in a tantalising clash next Saturday.
