Newcastle have stepped up their pursuit of Jesse Lingard.
Toon Army boss Eddie Howe wants major investment in the final week of the transfer window with Manchester United star Lingard top of the list.
Lingard only has six months left on his contract at Old Trafford, may prefer to become a free agent in the summer with United unlikely to sanction a loan under those circumstances.
That would make a move difficult but Newcastle are determined not to give up even if they might have to increase their offer in terms of a transfer fee and wages.
Lingard was a huge hit at West Ham last year but so far Newcastle appear to be the club pushing hardest as Howe regards him as a potentially great addition.
England international Lingard would be a huge coup for Newcastle and would be a major boost in their fight for survival.
They are still in the market for defenders and want two centre halves as they close in on one with a £32m move for Sevilla’s Diego Carlos edging closer.
Newcastle are also interested in Brighton ’s highly-rated midfielder Yves Bissouma who has been a target for Aston Villa but they appear to be keen on Juventus star Rodrigo Bentancur.
