Newcastle United forward Elliot Anderson scored the vital seventh goal that got his temporary side Bristol Rovers promoted to League One today.
The 19-year-old Newcastle United forward is currently on loan at League Two side Bristol Rovers who were playing Scunthorpe United in their final match of the season today. Rovers, managed by former Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton, had a chance to get promoted, but it was mathematically unlikely.
Their rivals for the final promotion spot were Northampton Town, who played Barrow this afternoon. To nick the spot, Rovers needed to beat Northampton’s win by five goals.

Incredibly, despite Northampton winning 3-1, Rovers did it, and it was thanks to a late goal from Anderson. In the 85th minute Anderson scored Bristol’s seventh goal, putting them 7-0 up, which put his side level on points and goal difference with Northampton, but ahead on goals scored.
After the goal, Rovers fans ran on to the pitch to celebrate, which resulted in the players leaving the pitch and the match being paused. The referee then brought the players back out but said the match would be abandoned if the pitch was invaded again – luckily it made it to the final whistle.
The goal capped an incredible run of performances for Anderson, who has scored eight goals in his 21 appearances for Bristol Rovers. He also won the League Two Goal of the Month award and was named the EFL Young Player of the Month for April.
Meanwhile Matty Longstaff also scored in League Two today. He has been at Mansfield Town since January and has also been a regular in the first team.
His goal came in his side’s 2-2 draw with League Two champions Forest Green Rovers. The result earned Mansfield a place in the play-offs.
