Newcastle star Callum Wilson misses England training again just days before France clash

Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson has missed England training once again as he recovers from a minor strain in Qatar. The 30-year-old has been kept away from the main group in recent days as a precautionary measure following the minor setback.

Wilson first missed training on Monday as England players who were not involved in the 3-0 win over Senegal were put through their paces by boss Gareth Southgate and his coaching staff. The Magpies striker continued his rehabilitation inside on Wednesday as the main group worked on the grass in preparation for the quarter-final clash with France on Saturday.

Wilson has only been used twice by Southgate during the tournament so far, coming off the bench in group games with Iran and Wales. Wilson helped himself to an assist in the first clash, with calls for him to start over Harry Kane earlier in the tournament.

Newcastle fans are eagerly awaiting updates from England's camp regarding Wilson's fitness but Magpies boss Eddie Howe is receiving regular updates on the condition of his No 9.

Howe, speaking from Newcastle's Saudi HQ in Riyadh, said on Tuesday: "I've been in regular contact with Callum and England. "Not necessarily me but our sports science team and medical team.

"He's fine. He's really enjoying himself and I think he's training very well. We're really happy to hear that."

While Wilson may face a short period on the sidelines, Newcastle strike partner Alexander Isak is stepping up his own return from injury. "It's a bit too early but he's doing well. This was the plan," Howe added.

"We didn't expect him to train with the group when we first started training so he's with the sports scientist team and physios."
