Newcastle ‘spanking’ leaves my job ‘in danger’, admits West Ham boss David Moyes

David Moyes has conceded he is “in danger” after his West Ham side were given a “spanking” by Newcastle on Wednesday night.

The Irons were hammered 5-1 as a string of individual errors cost Moyes’ side dear, despite an improved attacking display at the London Stadium.

Joelinton and Callum Wilson each scored braces, with substitute Alexander Isak also on target as the Toon strengthened their grip on a Champions League place.

The results leaves the Hammers outside the relegation zone only on goal-difference, but the manner of the defeat casts further scrutiny on Moyes’s position with just ten games of the Premier League season to go.

“No doubt [the board] are behind me, but if you lose badly like that as a manager you're always in danger,” the Scot told Sky Sports.

Speaking later in his post-match press conference, Moyes continued: “I'm a big boy, I've left jobs at other times in the past and if this one happens, well then I would have to go with that if that's the case.

"I really like my job here. I really like the people I work for. I've enjoyed my time greatly and I'm hoping there are a couple of big days ahead of us in the not-too-distant future.”

Moyes criticised right-back Thilo Kehrer for “really poor decision-making” in conceding the corner that led to Newcastle’s sixth-minute opener and called Nayef Aguerd’s error for Wilson’s second goal moments after half-time “not acceptable”.

“[It’s] really difficult, I’m disappointed,” Moyes added. “We started the game really well, probably as well as we’ve played. We made more opportunities than against Southampton.

“Then we gave away terrible first and second goals but not as bad as the third and fourth. That makes it very difficult when you do that.”
