Newcastle shortlist two Manchester United players as possible loan transfers

Newcastle have shortlisted Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson as a potential loan option before Monday's transfer deadline.

Henderson, 24, has been identified as one of a number of 11th-hour loans alongside United teammate Jesse Lingard but Newcastle can only loan in one player from another Premier League club.

Newcastle's attempt to sign Lingard last week faltered after United insisted on a survival bonus if the England international helped the 18th-placed Premier League side avoid relegation.

Henderson informed interim United manager Ralf Rangnick of his wish to leave on loan before the winter window opened but was blocked from doing so. That has not discouraged Henderson from pushing for a loan after making just two starts this season and Ajax have also held discussions with the 'keeper's representatives.

Although Newcastle have Martin Dubrabvka, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman in their goalkeeping department, manager Eddie Howe is dissatisfied with the standard and only Norwich have conceded more goals than Newcastle this season.

Dubravka regained his No.1 status in November after Woodman started the first four games of the season while the Slovak was injured and Darlow laid low by Covid-19.

Henderson was pencilled in to start the season as United's first-choice but contracted Covid in the first week of pre-season in July and was not available again until mid-September. David de Gea has improved immeasurably and is widely regarded as United's player of the season so far.

United academy graduate Henderson made 25 starts for United last term and assumed the No.1 role in March but has dropped out of the England squad this season and is prepared to leave the club permanently.

United have not indicated their willingness to sell Henderson, who is contracted to the club until 2025 and United have the option of an additional year.

Lingard, 29, is certain to leave United when his contract expires in June and is disgruntled by his treatment this season. Lingard has only started twice and is unhappy United scuppered a loan to Newcastle last week.
