Newcastle's owners already bank £54m boost despite new reminder of 'Big Six' challenge

Newcastle United are the 'fastest growing' Premier League brand following the takeover with their value soaring by £54 million in a single year. The latest edition of the annual 'Brand Football Finance 50' report indicates the Magpies have leapt six spots in their list of the most valuable clubs, now sitting just behind Serie A rivals AC Milan and Inter as well West Ham.

Newcastle's owners took something of a gamble by deciding to press ahead with their long-awaited takeover in October 2021, with the club winless and facing the prospect of relegation. However, in less than two years the club's fortunes have been drastically transformed as Eddie Howe's side are now preparing for a Champions League campaign following a fourth-placed finish.

Brand Football's 2023 report has crowned Manchester City - who are on the verge of repeating Manchester United's historic treble - as the world's most valuable football club brand. Pep Guardiola's side have usurped Real Madrid at the summit, with the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners valued at just shy of £1.3bn.

While making for a positive reading for Newcastle's owners, who will hope to see their listed value of £216m grow and overtake the £305m they paid in the coming years, it still illustrates the scale of the task they face in drawing level with the Premier League's elite. The 'Big Six' all unsurprisingly still dwarf the Magpies' total, with Chelsea's valuation of £742m still the lowest of these.

However, it is an encouraging start for a club that many had tipped for relegation little over a year ago. Newcastle's brand value change is measured at 32.9%, having been listed at £162m in the 2022 edition of the report.

Brand Finance's latest report reads: "Newcastle is the fastest-growing British football club brand this year, and the fourth-fastest growing overall. Newcastle increased brand value can be largely attributed to the £305 million Saudi-Arabian backedt akeover of the club in 2021.

"Fans celebrated the deal, as new owners committed to a long-term investment in the club with the hope of rejuvenating its success in major tournaments. Manager Eddie Howe’s leadership has also been considered instrumental in reforming the team’s mentality, tactics, and ambition, leading them to enjoy a successful 2022-23 season.

"Newcastle have just secured a return to the Champions League after a 20-year absence, an accolade which is sure to amplify the club’s brand strength and global reputation."
