Newcastle's new 'adult playground' to hold free New Year party featuring retro arcade games and DJ line-up

A new retro arcade bar dubbed Newcastle's 'adult playground' is set to hold a free New Year's Eve party for gamers.

Four Quarters opened on Dean Street earlier this month after taking over the premises of the former Gershwin's restaurant. It offers drinkers the chance to play vintage arcade games that range from the 1970s to the mid-2000s on lovingly restored machines.

The quirky venue even sees customers exchange pounds for American quarters which they can use on some of the machines.

Four Quarters bosses have said the concept has been a hit with Geordies since it launched in the city and now the bar is set to host a free party on December 31. Gamers will be able to play popular games including Pac-Man and Time Crisis 2 while they ring in the New Year with a retro soundtrack.

DJs Effkay, Spectra and AEMS will be bringing 80s synth, 90s rave music and classic dance anthems to the city centre bar from 9pm until 3am. A range of pizza, classic and on-theme cocktails and local craft beer will be on offer throughout the event.

Four Quarters is the chain's first in Newcastle following the success of its branches in London and Bristol. It is the second arcade bar to open in the city this year, following the launch of NQ64 on Pilgrim Street in August.

Four Quarters co-founder and director Marc Jones told ChronicleLive following its launch on December 8: "Four Quarters is the UK's original arcade bar and we have been trading for eight years now in London and Bristol. We are really happy to be here on Dean Street.

"It has been a project that has taken years to get going so we are really happy to be opening our doors. Customers will find an excellent range of craft beers and great cocktails.

"We are also an arcade, so we are an adult playground. We have authentic, retro, machines.

"We use American quarters and you can get four quarters for £1.50. The games are a really fun thing to do in a group and we have 30 games on site. We also have a range of plastic consoles.

"We are really happy to bring this to Newcastle for people to enjoy."

Four Quarters said anyone looking to come along to the event does not need to book, they can just turn up on the night.
