From established favourites to the latest newcomers, restaurants across the city are preparing to take part in a week-long event to showcase special menus at cut-price rates.
This summer's NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week is on course to be the biggest since its launch, with 112 venues - and still counting - signing up to take part. The twice-yearly event is hugely popular not only with diners keen to make the most of an opportunity to try a top restaurant for a fraction of the usual price but also with the venues themselves which are keen to showcase what they do to a wider customer base.
While initially established as a means to attract diners at traditionally quiet times of the year - January and August - Restaurant Week has turned into two of the busiest weeks for the trade, which is especially welcome following the struggles of the pandemic. Business improvement district company NE1 now reports its event boosts the local economy by more than £600,000 each time it is held.

This summer's run, from August 8-14, is the 21st and even those diners who attend regularly will find somewhere new to try this year as among those signed up are some of Newcastle 's newest restaurants as well as first-timers to the event: Victors, The Grey Owl, Hugo Brasserie, Firestone Artisan, No. 28, Persia and Société.
Newcastle has more independent restaurants per capita than any other city outside of London and Restaurant Week has been widely copied across the UK.
