Here’s our Newcastle player ratings as the Magpies brushed aside Wolves 3-0 at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.
Newcastle Punish Toothless Wolves
Alexander Isak scored twice as Newcastle United beat Wolves 3-0 at St James’ Park to move up to fourth in the table. The super Swede broke a club-record after netting in his eighth consecutive Premier League game.
Toon Army legend Alan Shearer previously held that honour after netting in seven straight top-flight matches. However, he won’t mind Isak taking all the plaudits.
The 25-year-old star opened the scoring after 34 minutes when his effort deflected in off of the unfortunate Rayan Ait-Nouri.
Isak completed his brace when a fine pass from Bruno Guimaraes found the striker in acres of space in the visitors box, sweeping the ball home from close range past Jose Sa.
With 74 minutes on the clock, Isak turned provider when he set up Anthony Gordon to wrap up the three points. The England winger has now scored or assisted in his last six league appearances.
Boss Eddie Howe has now overseen nine wins in a row across all competitions. During that run, Howe’s side have kept six clean sheets and conceded just three times.
From Wolves’ perspective, they remain in the relegation zone on 16 points. Vítor Pereira saw some positive moments on Tyneside but the Old Gold’s defensive frailties need addressing quickly.
Newcastle Player Ratings (4-3-3)
Martin Dubravka – 7
Pulled off a stunning save just after Wolves’ consolation effort was ruled out for handball. Stood up to the threat of Cunha very well as the Old Gold pushed for a late goal.
Tino Livramento – 7
The ever-impressive English full-back provided lots of zest and energy down the right-hand side. Always offered an attacking outlet and was sturdy in his defensive duties.
Dan Burn – 8
Dominant in the air as well as on the ground, the local lad was as solid as a rock at the back. Looked calm and composed throughout and only once did Cunha get the better of him.
Sven Botman – 7
Another commanding display from the recently-returned Dutch centre-back. Hard to believe how long his been out considering how professional and experienced his showing was.
Lewis Hall – 7
It’s probably a fair shout to consider the 20-year-old as the best left-back in the league currently. His buccaneering runs and sharp link up play caused Wolves plenty of problems. Kept Cunha fairly quiet, too.
Sandro Tonali – 7
The Italian midfielder had a thoroughly enjoyable night, dictating the tempo of play with considerable guile and ease. He also done the nitty gritty work which was asked of him and hardly stopped running all night.

Joelinton – 7
Never one to shy away from a crunching tackle, the Brazilian done his bit for the side. A few stray passes provided cause for concern but as the game grew, the midfielder looked more relaxed.
Bruno Guimaraes – 8
After a fairly sluggish start, the midfield dynamo grew in confidence and was a menace all evening long. Provided a brilliant assist for Isak’s second goal and helped dictate the play throughout.
Jacob Murphy – 7
Previously overrated, now seriously underrated. The right winger did everything right and caused Wolves plenty of trouble down the right-wing. Another inspiring display from the 29-year-old.
Anthony Gordon – 8
If only Gareth Southgate used him more at the Euros! The rapid winger’s work rate at both ends of the pitch is phenomenal. Loves to pick the ball up and drive at his defender. Scored the third and final goal.
Alexander Isak – 9
Running out of superlatives to describe the super Swede. His brilliant brace means he has now scored in eight consecutive Premier League games. The best football betting sites in the UK have him at 7/1 to win the Golden Boot.
Substitutes
Miguel Almiron – 6 (on for Murphy 78′)
Didn’t have a great deal of time to make an impact. Looked lively and showed plenty of attacking purpose.
Joe Willock – 6 (on for Gordon 78′)
Similar to Almiron, failed to make much of an impression in the game. Linked up well with Miley late on.
William Osula – 5 (on for Gordon 78′)
After scoring against Bromley, the youngster picked up some valuable minutes but didn’t have a sight on goal.
Lewis Miley – 6 (on for Joelinton 83′)
More valuable game time for the academy star. Adding some much-needed energy into the middle of the park.
Kieran Trippier – 5 (on for Livramento 85′)
Was introduced for the final few minutes and was largely ineffective. Received a decent reception from the crowd.
