Newcastle need 'Sergio Aguero-like signing' to replicate Manchester City success

Newcastle United need a Sergio Aguero like signing if they want to win every trophy available, says Frankie McAvennie.

The former West Ham United striker believes the Magpies will stay up this season and then focus on strengthening their frontline.

The Magpies have already brought in Chris Wood after Callum Wilson was ruled out with a long-term injury.

The New Zealand international is yet to open his Newcastle account but has given the Magpies different option in offensive areas.

Amanda Staveley sent out a old statement of intent, claiming United would challenge for the Premier League title and all the major honours.

Newcastle would have to replicate a Manchester City like project, something that has taken years to reach fruition.

“Newcastle need to look at Man City," McAvennie told Football Insider.

“Look at what they did when they got taken over because they want to do the same thing and win every trophy available.

“City signed Aguero and he came in and won them the league. That’s the player Newcastle will be looking for in the summer. They want their own Aguero.

“They will stay up and they will look to spend every penny they have on whoever this player is, this ‘Aguero signing’, if you like.

“Wilson is always injured and Wood isn’t scoring for them. The first thing they need is a quality striker.

“Get him in and the wins and maybe trophies will follow. I think that will definitely happen.”
