A Newcastle man in his 70s has lost his life with COVID-19, as the Hunter New England region records another 3,122 new cases.
The region has again recorded the highest number of cases in the state, with 1,053 positives recorded via PCR testing, and another 2,069 via rapid antigen results reported to NSW Health.
There are 61 COVID-19 positive patients receiving care in hospitals across the local health district, and two in intensive care.
As the state recorded 22,255 positive test results in the 24 hours to 4pm Wedneday, NSW reported the deaths of 16 people with COVID-19 - 11 men and five women.
The state's health authority said the latest NSW COVID-19 weekly data overview for the week ending April 2 showed 139,483 people were diagnosed with COVID-19 during that week - a decrease of 5 per cent compared with the previous week. The reported case rate remains highest in people aged 10-to-19 years.
The number of people being admitted to hospital, including intensive care, has increased.
The seven-day rolling average of daily hospital admissions increased to an average of 150 admissions, compared with 141 admissions at the end of the previous week.
