Newcastle have made a £40million bid for Leicester City star James Maddison. The Englishman has long been linked with a move to north London, but Arsenal have identified other targets in recent transfer windows.
football.london revealed last summer that Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is an admirer of Maddison, with Martin Odegaard's Real Madrid future looking uncertain at the time following his loan spell at the Emirates Stadium. A source close to Maddison told us that the 25-year-old was 'at the top of the list' for Arsenal in the summer transfer window.
football.london was told at the time that negotiations were 'very slow' and 'like a game of chess' but that Maddison remained keen on a move to north London. The major sticking point for Arsenal, however, was Leicester's demands of over £60million for the former Norwich and Coventry midfielder.

Now, Newcastle are keen to bring the 25-year-old to St. James' Park as they continue their resurgence under Eddie Howe stemming from their newfound wealth. As per the Telegraph, Newcastle have now made a £40million bid for the Foxes midfielder.
There was belief that Arsenal may reconsider Maddison in this transfer window, but their subsequent signing of Portuguese creator Fabio Vieira has suggested otherwise. Instead, the north Londoners have been linked with a move for the Englishman's Leicester City teammate, Youri Tielemans.
football.london understands that a central midfielder ranks highly as a priority for the Gunners in the rest of the window, with Tielemans thought highly of. It is reported that roughly £25million could land the Belgium international but a move is yet to materialise.
