Newcastle Liberal council candidates want to freeze rates for the incoming full four-year term.
Ward four councillor and lord mayoral candidate Callum Pull said he believed that rising cost of living pressures were pushing many household budgets to the brink and will push for the council to not increase rates if elected in September.
"We're living in a cost of living crisis; residents are paying more for groceries and more for electricity," Cr Pull said.
"Over the last decade rates have risen by more than 60 per cent."
"Rates have consistently increased by the maximum amount possible. These cost increases add to inflation and put further pressure on households in Newcastle."
Ward two councillor Jenny Barrie said the rate cut would help take the pressure off the family budget and ease cost of living pressures.
Ward one candidate Rochelle Manning said that that rates were "one of the top issues" residents had raised with her.
