Newcastle in ‘pole position' for Adrien Rabiot transfer with Chelsea in mix

Newcastle United’s upcoming summer transfer window will be watched by the eager eyes of many this year as they prepare to enter it as the richest club in world football, with a whole host of top names expected to be linked to the Magpies as a result.

One of those is Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot, who could be sold by the Serie A club this summer as Max Allegri considers a rebuild of his squad following their disappointing fourth-placed finish this term. And according to Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport, Newcastle are in pole position alongside Premier League rivals Chelsea to sign the Frenchman this summer, who can be sold for less than £13 million.

However, the Blues have finally had confirmation of Tedd Boehly’s successful purchase of the club this week from Roman Abramovich, and the Blues will now have cash to splash this summer.

If Rabiot goes in search of regular playing time, a move to join Newcastle's project may appeal. Joe Willock, Jonjo Shelvey and Joelinton often made up the central midfield three under Eddie Howe before January signing Bruno Guimaraes saw himself come into the fold on a regular basis towards the end of the campaign.

Rabiot will know that he would have much better opportunities to feature regularly at St. James’ Park than at Stamford Bridge, where the midfield options already consist of world-class players in the form of Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount.

Can Newcastle fend off competition from Chelsea to sign Rabiot this summer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

The former Manchester City youth product has become a popular figure in European football over the years, mainly due to the fact he spent seven years in the heart of Paris Saint-Germain’s midfield until his departure in 2019, in which he scored 24 times in 227 games in all competitions, collecting 18 trophies that included five Ligue 1 titles.

Rabiot then arrived at Juventus on a free transfer three years ago, and has continued his mainstay in midfield with the Italian outfit, in which he has racked up 129 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and collecting a further three trophies. Now, however, it looks as though he could be set to move on after making just 23 Serie A starts this term.

The 6ft 2in Frenchman would bring a wealth of experience and versatility to St. James’ Park and could reportedly be signed for less than £13million. On top of that, he is still only 27-years-old with his prime years still ahead of him.
