Newcastle HMRC building evacuated after 'suspicious item' found inside

A Newcastle HMRC building was evacuated after police were called to reports of a "suspicious item" inside.

At around 10.45am on Thursday, officers attended a premises in the Benton Park View area after being alerted to a suspicious item that had been found inside the building.

Part of the site, which Chronicle Live understands to be the HMRC building, was evacuated while experts investigated. However, the item was later confirmed not to be a danger to the public.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At about 10.45am today (Thursday) officers were alerted to a suspicious item inside a premises in the Benton Park View area of Newcastle.

“Emergency services attended the scene to carry out further enquiries into the discovery. As a precaution, part of the building was evacuated as experts carried out further safety checks. The item was later confirmed not to pose any danger to the public.

“We would like to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation as we and our partners carried out our enquiries.”
