Newcastle fans are excited at the prospect of Dan Ashworth becoming the new director of football at St James’ Park.
The former Brighton supremo - who spent five years at the FA as director of elite development - left his role on the south coast this morning amid a possible move to Tyneside.
ChronicleLive understands that Ashworth had been interviewed for the gig at Newcastle, who have actively been pursuing a sporting director since the £300million takeover was completed in October.
A Seagulls statement confirmed that the 50-year-old has left to seek pastures new at a rival Premier League club.
It read: “We are sorry to learn of Dan’s decision.
“As is the case with all top-quality people in any industry, we are always conscious of the risk of losing key staff to a rival.”
Toon supporters were quick to express their joy on social media following the announcement as Ashworth received the seal of approval from the fanbase.

@jonlane86: Think this is a more important appointment than Eddie Howe was. Club in need of full rebuild from top to bottom and Ashworth is key to that happening successfully. #nufc
