Newcastle evening headlines with Staveley's takeover fee truth, Almiron fitness call and stadium bid

Here are your latest Newcastle United headlines on April 20.

Staveley on takeover price

Amanda Staveley has admitted that Newcastle United's owners 'bought well' to purchase a 'special' club for a fraction of the price Chelsea were sold for just seven months later.

Although Newcastle were in relegation trouble at the time, and required sizeable investment at all levels of the club, the £305m Staveley's consortium landed the club for has come to represent something of a bargain. Chelsea, in contrast, went for a whopping £4.25bn last May.

These are clubs who have moved in very different directions ever since after using contrasting approaches. Scattergun Chelsea are languishing in 11th place, despite the club spending around £350m more than Newcastle's owners on new players to date, whereas the considered Magpies are bidding to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

However, in a talk at MIPIM, the world's largest real estate conference, it was put to Staveley that Chelsea had gone for a 'very attractive' rate, given the currency drop against the dollar, which 'worked in Todd Boehly's favour'. Staveley was then asked if there were any other 'trends' she was seeing or was it 'brand equity' that attracted her to Newcastle in the first place?

Targett quotes

Matt Targett reckons that a jumping St James' Park can help Newcastle United take a major step towards Champions League qualification on Sunday.

The left-back is pushing for a start in Eddie Howe's team but is looking forward to the comforts of home after three successive away matches. Newcastle yielded six points from nine against West Ham, Brentford and Aston Villa from a clutch of games many may have accepted a win and two draws from.

Euro 2028 bid

The UK and Ireland's Euro 2028 bid could be worth close to £100m for the city of Newcastle if it is successful after St James' Park was chosen as one of the host stadiums.

St James' was one of 10 stadia to make the final cut - which could lead to huge benefits for the city if the overall bid is picked by UEFA later this year. As well as the honour of having games at St James', ChronicleLive understands UK Sport's specially produced socio-economic modelling tool has estimated that being a host could be worth £98.7m to the city of Newcastle.

Given what is at stake, then, perhaps, it was not a surprise that Newcastle United and Newcastle City Council's joint-submission was a year in the making as the city bids to host European Championship matches for the first time since 1996. The FA first held a workshop event last April, where the association outlined the requirements, and a whopping 23 stadiums declared an interest in hosting during what was an extremely competitive process.

Brighton's model

Newcastle United are poised for a busy summer of transfer activity with a squad overhaul expected on Tyneside. Eddie Howe will be given a significant budget for first-team additions but there will be also be an additional focus on signing young, hungry prospects who can eventually mix it at senior level.

Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth has a wealth of experience when it comes to acquiring such raw talent, as seen at former club Brighton. The Seagulls are flying above their station at present, on the cusp of a surprise top seven finish.

Players such as Kaoru Mitoma, Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo have played an integral role in Brighton's success despite being plucked from obscurity in lesser leagues around the globe.

David Weir, Ashworth's replacement at Brighton, has waxed lyrical about his side's ability to offer a pathway to young players in a big hint as to how Newcastle may operate now Ashworth is at the wheel.

Solano on Almiron

Nobby Solano feels that Eddie Howe's decision to wrap Miguel Almiron in cotton wool for the decisive Premier League run-in should pay dividends.

Almiron remains Newcastle United's top scorer with 11 goals despite a recent thigh injury that resulted in the South American star missing four top-flight matches. The playmaker made his comeback at Aston Villa and got 34 minutes in the tank and is now in contention for the encounter against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

With eight games left Newcastle legend Solano expects Almiron to prove his worth and cap his best season on Tyneside yet. As the Magpies prepare to face Spurs, Solano has praised the 29-year-old.
